  5.  by his own people. (33-43)

  7.  #1-9 In these verses there is reference to the deliverance from
  8.  Egypt, and perhaps that from Babylon: but the circumstances of
  9.  travellers in those countries are also noted. It is scarcely
  10.  possible to conceive the horrors suffered by the hapless
  11.  traveller, when crossing the trackless sands, exposed to the
  12.  burning rays of the sum. The words describe their case whom the
  13.  Lord has redeemed from the bondage of Satan; who pass through
  14.  the world as a dangerous and dreary wilderness, often ready to
  15.  faint through troubles, fears, and temptations. Those who hunger
  16.  and thirst after righteousness, after God, and communion with
  17.  him, shall be filled with the goodness of his house, both in
  18.  grace and glory.

  21.  #10-16 This description of prisoners and captives intimates that
  22.  they are desolate and sorrowful. In the eastern prisons the
  23.  captives were and are treated with much severity. Afflicting
  24.  providences must be improved as humbling providences; and we
  25.  lose the benefit, if our hearts are unhumbled and unbroken under
  26.  them. This is a shadow of the sinner's deliverance from a far
  27.  worse confinement. The awakened sinner discovers his guilt and
  28.  misery. Having struggled in vain for deliverance, he finds there
  29.  is no help for him but in the mercy and grace of God. His sin is
  30.  forgiven by a merciful God, and his pardon is accompanied by
  31.  deliverance from the power of sin and Satan, and by the
  32.  sanctifying and comforting influences of God the Holy Spirit.

  35.  #17-22 If we knew no sin, we should know no sickness. Sinners
  36.  are fools. They hurt their bodily health by intemperance, and
  37.  endanger their lives by indulging their appetites. This their
  38.  way is their folly. The weakness of the body is the effect of
  39.  sickness. It is by the power and mercy of God that we are
  40.  recovered from sickness, and it is our duty to be thankful. All
  41.  Christ's miraculous cures were emblems of his healing diseases
  42.  of the soul. It is also to be applied to the spiritual cures
  43.  which the Spirit of grace works. He sends his word, and heals
  44.  souls; convinces, converts them, makes them holy, and all by the
  45.  word. Even in common cases of recovery from sickness, God in his
  46.  providence speaks, and it is done; by his word and Spirit the
  47.  soul is restored to health and holiness.

  50.  #23-32 Let those who go to sea, consider and adore the Lord.
  51.  Mariners have their business upon the tempestuous ocean, and
  52.  there witness deliverances of which others cannot form an idea.
  53.  How seasonable it is at such a time to pray! This may remind us
  54.  of the terrors and distress of conscience many experience, and
  55.  of those deep scenes of trouble which many pass through, in
  56.  their Christian course. Yet, in answer to their cries, the Lord
  57.  turns their storm into a calm, and causes their trials to end in
  58.  gladness.

  61.  #33-43 What surprising changes are often made in the affairs of
  62.  men! Let the present desolate state of Judea, and of other
  63.  countries, explain this. If we look abroad in the world, we see
  64.  many greatly increase, whose beginning was small. We see many
  65.  who have thus suddenly risen, as suddenly brought to nothing.
  66.  Worldly wealth is uncertain; often those who are filled with it,
  67.  ere they are aware, lose it again. God has many ways of making
  68.  men poor. The righteous shall rejoice. It shall fully convince
  69.  all those who deny the Divine Providence. When sinners see how
  70.  justly God takes away the gifts they have abused, they will not
  71.  have a word to say. It is of great use to us to be fully assured
  72.  of God's goodness, and duly affected with it. It is our wisdom
  73.  to mind our duty, and to refer our comfort to him. A truly wise
  74.  person will treasure in his heart this delightful psalm. From
  75.  it, he will fully understand the weakness and wretchedness of
  76.  man, and the power and loving-kindness of God, not for our
  77.  merit, but for his mercy's sake.
